Khairun Nafiz Tumu

Position
  • Doctoral Student
  • Graduate Research Assistant
Khairun Nafiz Tumu is a Graduate Student in the Food Science and Human Nutrition Department at the Iowa State University and is affiliated with the Polymer and Food Protection Consortium. She is doing her Ph.D. under the supervision of Dr. Greg Curtzwiler and serving as a Graduate Research Assistant. Her research interest is focused on finding non-intentionally added substance (NIAS), intentionally added substance (IAS), and endocrine modulating chemicals (phthalate, bisphenols) in recycled polymer material and gathering knowledge on polymer recycling legislation/policies. Her research at Iowa State University is funded by the Institute for the Advancement of Food and Nutrition Sciences (IAFNS).
She has her master’s degree in Food Science, Technology and Business (BiFTec) from KU Leuven, Belgium, and is an awardee of Erasmus Mundus from the European Commission. Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology was her major during her bachelor's and first master’s degree from JUST, Bangladesh. Her master's research work was funded with NST Fellowship by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Bangladesh. Khairun has experience in solvent extraction of polymeric material, performing chromatographic analysis (GC-MS, GC-QqQ), proximate composition analysis, rheological property analysis (Texture Analyzer - TA), etc.
